I was born in Malaysia and grew up there.
My father worked for Malaysian Customs & Excise, and at one stage was Deputy Commissioner, and so we moved around a lot, living (as I remember) in Penang, Port Swettenham (now Port Kelang), Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, and ending up in Petaling Jaya in the late 1960's, when my father started working for Malayan Breweries as Sales Manager.
In 1971 I went to high school as a boarder in Singapore at the brand new Singapore International School (which was later renamed the United World College of South East Asia in 1975).
Completeing high school in 1976 with 8 GCSE "O" Levels and 3 "A" Levels, I went home to KL to work for a year before going to college in London. I lived in London from 1977 to 1985.
I then moved to Perth in Western Australia and have lived there ever since. Not only is Perth the city in which I have lived the longest time in my life, Australia has now become the country in which I have spent the most time.
Professionally, I am a Chartered Accountant qualified (1979) in the United Kingdom and Australia.
I specialise in tax and accounting services, but also provide expertise in the areas of Business and Strategic Plans, Business and Organisational Reviews and other Organisational Development (Change Management) needs.
I am also actively involved in Aboriginal Affairs in Australia, having been engaged in consultancies by State and Federal Government agencies as well as directly assisting Aboriginal communities and businesses, particularly in the north west.
Working in London in the late 1970's, I was involved in the development of Beta testing for computerised accounting software on Olivetti mini-computers through their use in the Chartered Accounting firm of Parekh & Somaiya. As Practice Manager, I also planned and implemented the changeover from Olivetti mini-computer systems to IBM PC's in the early 1980's – just as PC's were starting to develop as a real commercial tool.
In Perth, Western Australia in the mid-1980's, I was an Account Manager in KMG, an international Chartered Accounting firm, and was also Manager of the Perth KMG Microlab, an early “shopfront” concept that put together various makes and models of PC's (including Apple Mac's) to allow clients to test various hardware and software systems before buying.
From the late 1980's I was a Principal with Arthur Andersen, another international accounting and management consulting company.
Whilst with Arthur Andersen, I was seconded to their world headquarters in Chicago where I headed up a team that wrote and delivered training programs for Arthur Andersen consultants worldwide. During this period I worked in the US, Japan and Singapore delivering the training programs, conducting train-the-trainer courses, as well as managing client assignments. At the same time I retained and developed my Perth-based client portfolio.
In 1991 I left Arthur Andersen and co-founded a Chartered Accounting practice called King & Oh which was set up to service small businesses with large firm expertise.
I helped to grow and develop King & Oh until in 2004 I left the partnership to form my own company, OTS Management, and seek new horizons that encompassed the full and holistic servicing of Small and Medium Enterprises, using my own management and consulting procedures, processes and products.
In my 40's now, I particularly enjoy the type of work I am doing, coaching people and businesses to be the best that they can be, I see myself growing my company, and the loyal team that I have gathered around me, into an entity where the staff see themselves as a family, and gradually take over from me.
I am finding the time to indulge in my non-work interests again, after the last 20 years of frantic activity establishing myself professionally in different countries, and finally establishing businesses.
I endeavour to stay fit and healthy, exercising every day. I enjoy reading a wide range of books from classis novels to new works, from technical management books to history - anything!
I enjoy painting - a medium I played around with in primary school and then picked up again in the 1990's through attending art classes with a client of mine. I have also started writing again. I have always written - poetry in high school, short stories at college, technical manuals and management articles professionally. However, with some time on my hands somewhere between work and bedtime, I am revisiting my poems and short stories.
